(Prescription Only Medicine)
Human Growth Hormone (HGH), also known as somatropin, is a peptide hormone naturally produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, where it plays a central regulatory role in growth, cell regeneration, and metabolic function throughout the body. Synthetic somatropin is biologically identical to naturally occurring human growth hormone, produced using recombinant DNA technology. In clinical use, it acts primarily by stimulating hepatic production of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1), which mediates many of growth hormone's downstream effects on bone density, lean muscle mass, and lipid metabolism. It is used clinically to address a range of conditions involving growth hormone deficiency or insufficiency, including paediatric and adult growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome, chronic kidney disease-related growth failure, Prader-Willi syndrome, and short bowel syndrome.
