Human Growth Hormone (HGH), also known as somatropin, is a peptide hormone naturally produced by the pituitary gland that plays a central role in growth, cell regeneration, and metabolic regulation throughout the body. Synthetic somatropin is biologically identical to naturally occurring human growth hormone and is used clinically to address conditions involving growth hormone deficiency or insufficiency.

Clinical uses include:

• Growth hormone deficiency in children and adults
• Turner syndrome
• Chronic kidney disease-related growth failure
• Prader-Willi syndrome
• Short bowel syndrome
• HIV/AIDS-related muscle wasting (in some jurisdictions)

Growth hormone acts on receptors throughout the body, stimulating the liver to produce IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1), which mediates many of its downstream effects on bone density, muscle mass, and lipid metabolism.

Prescription-only medicine (POM). Somatropin is regulated under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 and is only available in the UK with a valid prescription from a registered clinician, following clinical assessment. It is not available for general sale.
